First off we have the lovely Kirsty of KA Design, Based in Cardiff Kirsty makes the most stunning and precision perfect gift cards and prints you will ever see.

unnamed (4)readyLets start it off easy. Tell us a little about yourself and your business

I’m Kirsty, I’m one of those am-dram kids your Mother warned you about; and I’m also known as KA Graphic Design. Somerset born and bred, but beautiful Caerdydd is most definitely home from home now. I’m a design and work a lot on custom projects from wedding stationary to brochures. I specialise in creating cards and prints for every occasion, because let’s face it; everyone loves surprise post!

With a quick sense of humour and ability to brighten up anyone’s day with the cutest greetings cards its no wonder we are in love with her Christmas cards, particularly her Welsh ones!

Graphic design fueled by sarcasm and a quote or two

What skill and techniques do you need to create your products?

Design and ‘quick wit’

What most inspires your creativity?

A sunny day, and people.

Where did it all begin and where do you see yourself going?

My degree is in Graphic Comms and while I enjoy my day job, I love designing the rest of the time. I’ve started selling in small stores, and would love to expand that way.

unnamedreadyWhat is your favourite part of EML?

Seeing lots of friendly maker faces and meeting buyers in the flesh!

Kirsty can be found hiding away in theatres escaping everyday mundanity or curled up on the sofa; but if you don’t fancy being the rude people in the theatre chatting away you can meet her over on Facebook or Instagram , why not head over to her Etsy page to get in a few quick orders for Christmas cards before they are all gone!

Fragment Design

2015-09-26 Workshop photos and video 119readyWe are so very happy to welcome the talented Sarah of Fragmented Designs into this years EML; I’m sure when you meet her in person you will be filled with the same level of appreciation and admiration of her nature infused jewellery and just wish one day to find a lovely set of her earrings or a ring under the Christmas tree

“I started my business 7+ years ago when I was too ill to stay in my teaching job; I will admit it was desperation that made me make the jump into self employment! But it was the best decision I ever made! Working for myself has allowed me to get my health back on track and to embrace my not very good with authority side 🙂 I also love that every day is different, yes I physically make jewellery, but I also photograph it and write descriptions, I built a website this year, I even enjoy doing my accounts….because its not everyday, I couldn’t do it everyday!”

What skill and techniques do you need to create your products?

One of the fun things about making jewellery is there is always a different skill to learn, currently, most of my work involved sawing, drilling, soldering and finishing, but this year I’ve added keum boo and stone setting and tried my hand at wax carving. I have a few courses booked for next year that I can’t wait to add to my skill set with!

Where did it all begin and where do you see yourself going?

I’m going to take this literally! ….A portion of a spare room in a small flat in Roath, now its a full room and a few extra bits in a house in Caerphilly, and I’d like to get to a full studio where I can run workshops and have the space I dream of!

It’s clear to see that Sarah’s hard work and persistence shines through in her pieces. We are absolutely in love with her dinosaur earrings but of course the fellers aren’t forgotten about as she also makes them into witty cufflinks – perfect for those days where you need to a little motivation in conquering the world.

What most inspires your creativity?

Walking and just letting my mind wander.

During Sarah’s downtime she can be found rambling around Morgan Jones Park in Caerphilly, luckily enough only a stones through away from the front door providing her with some much-needed relaxation and space to unwind.

What is your favourite part of EML?

It’s lovely seeing so many makers come together, the fact we organise it ourselves makes all the difference!

Sarahs positive mindset and success certainly is the motivational story we have all been dreaming of, and we hope to see a lot more of her work in the years to come but if you can’t wait to find them in your local boutique store or market. Head over to her Etsy store or admire the incredible floral wedding bands over on her Instagram and Facebook page.

Joey Bananas

We finish off our meet the maker post today with the talented duo from Joey Bananas. Their witty and playful creations leave us wanting to deck the kids play room with plush toys and add a little whimsy to the hallway walls that have been waiting patiently for the perfect illustrative print.

“We’re a husband and wife team based in the Vale of Glamorgan.  We make Welsh and English plush toys, prints, bags and greeting cards. Our products are all our own designs, handmade and eco-friendly. Our ethos is to amuse and entertain the eye with bright, unique, feel good prints. You can buy your goods on our website  and our Etsy Shop ”

notebookreadyMy inspirations are varied -I’m a fan of classic designs from the 50’s and 60’s like Saul Bass, Lichenstein, Warhol. I’m a type obsessive (snob!) too. My background is product design so I also enjoy learning from design classics that have endured for years like the London Tube map, the Swiss Army knife etc. My goal is to produce attractive but useful designs that will endure.

In my day job, I’m an Art Director for a web design agency. I produce all our designs myself so design skills are needed. The designs are then screenprinted by hand so screenprinting skills are also needed. It can be a fiddly and time-consuming process but it means each end product is unique so it’s  well worth it. Using a sewing machine is another skill I’ve learnt recently to produce our bwci-bo plush toys.

Joey Bananas is very new we only started it this year. So we are still learning and developing. We hope to be able to quit our day jobs eventually and do it full time but we’re a long way off achieving that goal.

We are so glad these guys have decided to take the leap of faith into making their own range of vibrant home décor and accessories and can’t wait to see these colorful characters come to life in person. Our favorite make has to be the little monster storage bags – perfect for stashing away all the little bits and bobs in the living room whilst leaving a smile on our face.

What is your favourite part of EML?

This will be our first EML but we really enjoy the idea of meeting and mixing with other local crafters and getting the chance to showcase our products to kindred spirits.

Kindred spirits indeed; like ourselves, these guys love nothing more than to unwind in front of the TV, glass in hand and the cat (hopefully in a sociable mood) by their side.

We can’t wait to meet all of these lovely crafters if you would like to join us for this years Etsy Made Local then head over to the Tramshed, Cardiff on December 2nd 10am- 5pm for more information head over to the Cardiff and valleys Creatives Facebook Page and mark yourself as going for the event!
