Next up on our meet the makers series we have Helen of Nelly’s Treasures.
Can you tell us a little about what you do?
I’m a screen printer based in Cardiff who specialises in bold and colourful design for children’s rooms. I mostly turn my illustrations into fun plush cushions or greetings cards. Recently I’ve started designing an animal alphabet which I’ve been printing onto banners to hang on the wall.
How did you get started?
After studying Textile design in Falmouth college of art I worked for a few years designing patterns or sewing until I realised I wanted to work for myself. It’s great having creative control of your own business and the direction you want to take it. It’s definitely hard work but very satisfying.
Where are you from?
I grew up in Penarth just outside of Cardiff. I’ve lived in Cornwall and in London for a while too but moved back about 10 years ago and absolutely love it here. I enjoy living close to the sea and Cardiff has a great community of makers and artists. Plus being close to my family is important to me.
What’s your favourite part of what you do?
I don’t feel like I have a choice in the matter. I think part of being an artist/designer/maker is that it is a part of your personality. I get very frustrated if I’m unable to create!
What’s your favourite item to make?
I’ve really enjoyed making some wooden decorations recently. Screen printing onto wood is new to me but I really love how it looks so I think it’s definitely something I’m going to do more of.
What inspires you?
Everyday life, watching films, reading books, daydreaming and chatting and bouncing ideas round with friends.
What was your proudest moment?
I’ve recently had my first child, an absolutely beautiful little boy named Felix. Bringing him into the world was an incredible experience and I feel super proud of that.
If you won a million pounds what would you do?
Probably spend it all on craft supplies and trainers.
