Meet The Maker – Eco Closet and The Traveller Hairpin

With less than two weeks to go for Etsy Made Local, we’re excited to introduce two new stallholders. Making a variety of accessories and clothing that were sure you’ll enjoy.

Eco Closet

leaf logo square - Hannah BlackburnOur first maker is the lovely Hannah of Eco Closet, a clothing and accessory brand that takes inspiration from preloved fabric and textiles and upcycles them into something a little more modern and sustainable. We wanted to know a little more about the maker behind the brand and here’s what Hannah had to say:

“I’m 25 and originally from Sheffield. I moved to Cardiff 7 years ago for university and never looked back! I’ve always been passionate about nature and our environment so I started The Eco Closet last year to combine my love of the planet with my love of fashion. My business is all about encouraging slow fashion and taking time and care to make each piece.”

We are so excited to have such a fresh and innovative business join us this year at Etsy Made Local and can’t wait to see what wonderful creations she’ll have available.

The main skills I need for my business are pattern cutting and sewing, but also being able to see the potential of old second-hand fabrics and create new pieces that people will love again!

It’s so rewarding when you hear about indie-businesses achievements and growth and we are dead proud to hear that Hannah is doing so well and pushing her clothing brand to new opportunities:

I think my biggest achievement of the year was making my first Etsy sale. It was an amazing feeling to know that someone liked my designs and wanted to buy something unique and eco-friendly.

Where did it all begin and where do you see yourself going?

IMG_20191103_105619 - Hannah BlackburneditI started The Eco Closet during my masters degree in fashion marketing where I began to learn more about the current state of our fashion industry and the devastating effects it has on our planet. I decided I wanted to use the skills I have to make clothes that don’t have such a negative impact on our environment.

As sustainability and environmental awareness are becoming the public norm we are glad to provide the opportunity for Hannah to showcase all her hard work and effort in making the industry a little greener.

What is your favourite thing about EML?

My Favourite thing about Etsy Made Local is definitely seeing all the amazing skills we have in our local area, it just goes to show that we can get everything we need in our own city and support local businesses at the same time!

At the top of Hannah’s wish list, this year is a wall hanging from the very talented Katheryn Emily Designs, we have to agree the macrame wall hangings are a wonder to look at.

One of Hannah’s favourite makes are her lovely fabric earrings – we have to agree with her as these are at the top of our shopping list too:

“ I find it really satisfying to use the small pieces of fabrics I have leftover that would otherwise go to waste.”

Head over the Eco Closet’s Etsy to browse a few more of her latest makes, or why not scroll through her Instagram and Facebook to see some behind the scene’s insights.

The Traveller Hairpin

11885214_10205893597873987_5287178252391481547_n - Adrienn MichaelseditOur second maker is the very talented and creative Adrienn of The Traveller Hairpin; making a variety of hair accessories for women we’re sure more than a few will be added into stockings or under the Christmas tree this year.

Taking inspiration from her travels Adrienn sells a variety of designs that will spark a little happiness in everyone.

What skills or techniques do you need to create your products?

Don’t know exactly how to answer this question, what I use the most is research and my experience in 20 years of retail, to find designs that women like.

DSC_1086 - Adrienn MichaelseditWe love the choice of colours and designs available from The Traveler Hair Pin; it’s no wonder Adrienn has had such an incredible first year of business:

“The Traveller Hairpin” is 1 year old, and I achieved my first £10000/ year (my goal for the first year in business).

It’s so lovely to hear that with such a young business there is already such momentum and popularity, we’re sure that the future will be filled with success and even more travelling and inspiration:

It all began when we decided to travel the world in our VAN, in 2021 we are embarking on an amazing travel around Europe for a year.

What is your favourite thing about EML?

The amazing seller and their unique products.

When Adrienn isn’t too busy running her indie-business she loves to unwind outside in her garden with a good book. No doubt thinking up more wonderful ideas or collections to create.

At the top of her Etsy Gift wish list is another local creative Natacha of Coconutacha. Who wouldn’t want some of her colourful designs filling the home office or studio space?
