Today’s meet the maker is the lovely Ruth of Mabli Jack, you might remember Ruth from last years pop up shop but also from St Davids day when both of us dressed up as proper Welsh ladies 🙂 Don’t we look lovely 🙂
Can you tell us a little about what you do?
I make bags accessories and more from British made felt and linen. I try as best I can to just use British materials in my products. It can be a bit limiting sometimes as I cannot get what I want here, but then it makes me come up with an alternative idea. Or if it is metal I ask my husband to make it for me!
How did you get started?
I worked as a theatre costume maker in my twenties but my life all changed with my first child. I now have three children and live too far away from any theatres to work there but still felt the need to sew. I experimented with different fabrics and found I love the robustness of the felt and the rawness of the linen.
Where are you from?
I was born and brought up in West Wales but went to England for college and then work. I returned to Wales to raise my family.
What’s your favourite part of what you do?
I enjoy the flexibility and that every day is different.
What’s your favourite item to make?
I love making these purses as they are fun and can be used for so many different things. Also they have my husbands hand forged stainless steel button on the front.
What inspires you?
All sorts and everything!
If you could pass any law what would it be?
A bit serious but .. compulsory voting.
If you won a million pounds what would you do?
Finish our house! and buy my husband a deerhound puppy that he had to share with me.
